Thanks for the awesome site! I hadn't heard anything about Uli in years, so this is much appreciated. I got into Mr. Roth from the old Scorps, I had a vinyl copy of "Astral Skies" (which was later stolen), and saw him at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver, CO in 1985.
What a great guitarist!
Hey, what's with the Yngwie vs Uli pics? That's cool.

I don't know who puts the "we'll burn the sky" tab on the web, but I beg the person to continue. For so long I have been looking for the tab of this fantastic song!
By the way, can anybody tell me how to find other (official) tabs? Thank you

Like many of you, I first heard Uli with the Scorpions and have been a fan ever since. Living in a rural town,(we have three stoplights and only two of them work,) it has been extremely difficult to find any info on Uli's post-Scorpions career. I would like to thank you for a very informative site dedicated to a true virtuoso. Please continue to update us on tours, albums, etc... It is nice to see that there are so many people from so many different backgrounds who have been touched by one man's music. "MAKE MUSIC, NOT WAR!!!"

Just bought the new "tokyo tapes"-edition. It´s just a butchered mess leaving off one of the key tracks "polar nights" instead of releasing a double CD; the record company/Scorpions management is treating old fans of the 70s line-up like shit! I´m really angry!

Hello everybody!
I went to Detmold a few days ago to see the concert there.
It was absolutely amazing! My personal highlights were the excerpts from West Side Story; Debbie Bonham sang an absolutely wonderful version of "Since I´ve been lovin´you";
There was also a world premiere as Uli played "Amadeus"!

Nice pages you have here, I just found them through Altavista.
I'm gonna say a few words about Uli. Uli Roth is one of my biggest influences with Eddie Van Halen, Steve Morse, Matthias Jabs, John Petrucci, Randy Rhoads and finnish blues guitarist Albert Järvinen(May he rest in peace). I have been a big Scorpions fan since 1991, when I got "Savege Amusement" album from my sister. Few years ago I bought "Hot&Hard" collection album and I heard Uli's playing first time. I liked his way to mix his Hendrix-style guitar playing with euro-classical variations and modes. I think he's the man who is the inspiration of Yngwie Malmsteen and others who mix rock and classical music. Personally I hate Ymgwie, he has not style in his playing.
I play in three bands. My very first band, Burnside, plays rock/metal style music. Another band called Celesty plays power metal like Gamma Ray, Rhapsody and Helloween. My third band, Discipline plays something like old Paradise Lost. My style is far from Uli, but he's one of the best guitarists the music have.

hi i first got into uli sometime in the mid eighties i already had heard of him on the scorpions albums but when i heard the original version of starlight on tommy vance´s friday rock show it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and brought me out in goosepimples i have been after a copy of this track ever since but have only managed to find a few albums and a newer version of the track which has an orchestra and the guitar solo is toned down a bit if anyone knows where i can get a copy in any format please let me know and if you have heard the newer version please listen to the old version for real raw emotional guitar playing at it´s best. Thank you for this site do you mind if i put a link to it on mine

just received Uli's new double CD, Transcendental Sky Guitar. WOW, he's incredible! "Sky Overture" is brillant & his reading of Air De Aranjuez by Rodrigo is very moving.

does anyone know if Uli will perform in the US this year or next to support his latest CD? if so, does anyone know where & when he is performing?

also, i'm very interested in obtaining accurate guitar tabulature transcriptions of Uli's work, especially "We'll Burn The Sky" from Tokyo Tapes w/ Scorpions, "Hiroshima" from Fire Wind & "Sky Overture" from Transcendental Sky Guitar.

Pretty cool stuff here on the web, I have been a big Ulrich Roth fan since I first heard his playing on "Fly to the rainbow" back in 1975. I mean this guy really blew me away,
Fave cuts, DRIFTING SUN - SPEEDY'S COMIN - FLY TO THE RAINBOW. All through his career with the Scorpions he was the coolest. FAV ROTH CUT - "POLAR NIGHTS"

because of astral skies in 84 I have never watched another grammy show. the album ment so much and was so amazing iwas convinced that the american public was being duped. I cant tell you in words how much I apreciate your site. PS:in the early 80s i had a freeind in san jose named gordon who was a bass player in another band and uli and him were pen pals they would write regularly and exchange photos most of wich were taken in the beach with his family. Ill always remember how special it was to me to see the photos and touch his written words. I guess in a way it kinda made me feel like a school girl with a weird crush.Mr satriani lives a few blocks from my freind tim 3 tcitys down and I am going to try and see him when he jogs and ask if he has any info on G3 uero videos or has any hes a pretty regular guy in berkely so we shall see if I get anything I will share Pierre Petuya III

It's great to hear other Uli fans. I first got turned on to Uli when a friend played me the live version of "Fly to the Rainbow" from the Tokyo Tapes. This was around 1983. As a devoted Hendrix fan I instantly wanted to hear more. Initially I got hold of the various Scorpions albums featuring Uli but it took some time to find out about his post Scorpions career and to then obtain copies of the Electric Sun albums. In March 1985, I got hold of Beyond the Astral Skies, it must have just arrived here because the album featured a sticker promoting concert gigs in Germany for March and April. While I have loved all of his stuff, this really took things to a new plane. I have to say that I don't think I listened to anything else for the next six months (perhaps more).

By coincidence, through a friend, I got hold of a copy of Guitar Player magazine from around 1986 which featured an interview with Uli. I wanted to know what Uli was working on since Astral Skies and so corresponded with the author/interviewer. He kindly wrote back and suggested that should I want to correspond with Uli he would happily pass it on. This I did and some time later I received a card from Uli. As it turned out I was planning to head to UK/Europe in 1989. I managed to make contact with him in England and we ended up meeting on a few occassions. All I can say is that Uli is a wonderful person, very kind and gentle, we had some fabulous discussions about music, Hendrix, the meaning of life stuff etc.

At the time he was living with Monika Danneman near Brighton in Sussex, where had a home studio and has working on a classical concerto. I was priviliged to hear some of the material and to see him with his Sky guitar and the strat he used for many of his Scorpions recordings. Despite his obvious musical talent and artistic genius, he was really quite a down to earth person. He is vegetarian, has an interst in all things artistic and spiritual and at the time he was studying martial arts. For all of you in the States, he mentioned that a music video of "The Night the Master Comes" had been released and that some American friends had seen it on MTV. Regretfully I have never had the pleasure. He also showed pointed out that there is a rare concert poster of Jimi Hendrix, I think it was taken in Holland (could be wrong) which contains Uli at the front of the stage in the audience.

A number of years have passed since then and I often wondered what material he has put out or performances he has done. About three years ago I picked up the "Prologue to the Symphonic Legends" which, I absolutely adore. Through this site I am keen to get hold of the concert performances mentioned on video and I look forward to further updates on releases etc.

I hope that this has been of some interest to you, as someone said in an earlier piece, its like we all have a link through Uli and his music. Thanks.

Superb site! I found you through the newsletter Ted (from Canada) sends out. I especially like the tabs section, as it is extremely difficult to figure out Uli's stuff by ear, at least for me it is. I played a gig with Electric Sun back in '85 at the Country Club in LA. Got to watch him soundcheck and, after my band's set, came out front and crowded to the front of the stage to get a birds-eye view of the master at work, and man I STILL couldn't figure out just exactly what the hell he was doing! I was thinking that maybe a bunch of us Uli fanatics ought to start some kind of petition to a competent transcriber, someone like Wolf Marshall, to get off his lazy ass and do a note-for-note Uli book. I mean, do you REALLY need a book to learn shit like Green Day? That's the kind of crap that you see advertised in Guitar World and the rest of 'em. Anyway, I have tried numerous times to cop the licks from We'll Burn the Sky--live and Longing For Fire and Catch Your Train and a whole lot of his solo stuff but I can't seem to get it. Do you know anyone who has figured this stuff out, Rhythm parts included? I need ASSISTANCE, bad.

uli has been a major artistic influence in my life. his melodic playing, ground breaking use of harmonic minor scales, teamed with a penetrating mid-range sound, gave a soulful feel and sound unmatched by the british call and response blues riff sound. i fondly recall a music project in 1975, where i did a presentation on uli and tried to explain how his unique style of play skyrocketed uli past the famed guitarists of the era. my teacher was so turned on by uli's delivery that he pestered me for a complete discography of uli up to that time. uli still remains my sanctuary to this day. not taking anything away from today's talented chopsters, but when i need to get away, when i need to step back from barrages of spit-fire licks, i run to uli for a large dose of the way it used to be and for all accounts, the way it shall remain!
